Prayatna: A Vocational Training Program for Special Learners
Skills are like seeds. When sown with care, they sprout into wonderful opportunities! At Sri Arunodayam, we plant those seeds by equipping our youngsters with practical, meaningful trades that empower them and uplift the communities they become part of. Through hands-on training in tailoring, dairy farming, and agricultural work, they discover new skills and begin their journey toward independence.
This is made possible through Prayatna, our vocational training centre, which means “good effort.” The name perfectly reflects the spirit of our youngsters who show up every day, determined to shape their own future.
The Prayatna Story
Back in 2012, we launched Prayatna to provide youngsters above 18 years old with practical skills to sustain a trade and live with dignity. In the beginning, the focus was largely on occupational therapy to help them build interactive and social skills within a safe and supportive environment. It was a space where they could engage, learn, work, and grow at their own pace.
The early days came with challenges — youngsters and teachers had to discover new ways to communicate and collaborate. Teachers learned to walk the fine line between firmness and kindness, helping youngsters learn through encouragement rather than pressure.
As we began focusing on ability over disability, everything changed! Youngsters took pride in their work. They felt a renewed sense of belonging and purpose. Productivity soared! Through this journey, Prayatna became much more than a vocational training centre. It became a place where self-worth blossomed and independence took firm root. Now they see themselves as capable contributors to the community.
Skills We Teach
Tailoring – Crafting beautiful cloth and jute products. (Take a look at our catalogue!)
Dairy Farming – Hands-on training at our 7,000+ sq. ft. modern dairy facility, home to a healthy herd of around 50 cows. Trainees gain experience in every aspect of animal care and dairy management.
Agricultural Farming – Practical experience across 10+ acres of farmland – nurturing orchards, kitchen gardens, and seasonal crops. Trainees learn to grow, tend, and harvest with care and respect for the earth.
Our Best Practices
Monthly Stipend: Trainees receive a stipend directly credited to their bank accounts each month.
Motivational & Interactive Sessions: Regular talks and activities to inspire, engage, and build confidence.
Weekly Feedback: Work-in-place feedback sessions every week to track progress and celebrate achievements. (Read more here)
Monthly Outings: Exciting outings each month to encourage bonding, exploration, and fun.

A ‘Tailored’ Path to Independent Living
At our tailoring units in Chennai and Ramasamudram Village, trainees learn the complete process — from threading a needle to crafting a finished product! They learn the fundamentals of cutting, stitching, finishing, and even how to maintain their machines. Each piece they create builds fine motor skills, focus, and patience. They are now taking on large orders, and some are even dreaming of starting their own small tailoring units!

The Milky Way to Self-Reliance with Our Four-Legged Companions
Our dairy farming programme connects trainees to the rhythms of nature and the joy of caring for animals. They learn to feed, clean, milk, and monitor animal health — developing strong routines, responsibility, and empathy in the process. Beyond animal care, they gain an understanding of farm hygiene, record keeping, and teamwork, preparing them for employment in dairy cooperatives or small farm ventures. In their daily work, they learn that kindness and discipline are the keys to a sustainable future.

Sowing Seeds of Independence Through Agricultural Farming
Our agricultural farming module teaches youngsters cultivation techniques — from soil preparation, seed sowing, and watering, to composting, pruning, and harvesting — while learning sustainable organic farming and pest control practices. Working in the fields builds physical strength and coordination, along with patience and perseverance. It also encourages environmental awareness and respect for the land — a vital lesson for building a sustainable future.
